Surprisingly, there are a number of uses for a large flatbed scanner. Granted, most of us will never need one, but we may very well benefit on some level from their existence. Some of the largest scanners are up to around 40 inches wide with a glass surface, and as mentioned, may come on a base with wheels. Large scanners are used to save old newspapers. Because of their size, a large flatbed scanner is the only thing that can capture the entire page. Newspapers are especially vulnerable to damage or destruction because of fire, natural disasters, and even bugs such as moths and other insects. Plus, newspaper breaks down eventually. Because large flat bed scanners is specialty items, it requires more power and may be more expensive to pay for replacement parts and take more time to repair when it breaks down. Also, because of the sheer size, it's not something that you can simply plop down on a regular office desk. Hence, the base and wheels so it can be moved around and moved out of the way for storage. Flatbed large format scanners have a distinct advantage over drum scanners or sheet-fed scanners. They are not going to destroy the document or damage it in the process of scanning. Drum scanners have to pull the paper or other material through and thus it can be a risk to the document or material. Flatbed scanners remove that problem.
History, especially, benefits from today's large flatbed scanner. This makes it possible to preserve larger and over-sized documents such as newspapers and architectural drawings and even textiles. Clearly flatbed large format scanners are a useful invention.
